Do Aussies tip for massage? If so how much?

If not, do you think that people would tip at big, international hotel spas? And what is the range for typical spa commissions for massages and body treatments? What do independent M. Is the market super-saturated, or can a person do alright with proper skill and experience?

Thank you so much ahead of time to anyone who might be able to answer these questions.

I really appreciate it. I'm not a massage therapist but I am the recipient of regular massages from massage therapists in Brisbane. The cheaper of this range are from therapists which operate from home or their own businesses.

At the more expensive end, these therapists work for an employer. The employer can take up to half of the fee. I always have to book one or two weeks in advance as the massage therapists are usually quite busy. Australians usually do not tip. Well, I don't limit myself to the Cantonese speaking Chinese ants with an English accent that I have talked so ofen about in the past She sydney to work in the UK, HK and on massage ships. The verdict of her and all of her peers are that Australians, New Zealanders and Japanese are the world's worst tippers [there is no tipping culture in Japan].

I think if you rely on tips from Australians, you are going to struggle. Some but by no forum all upmarket hotels will levy a service charge, so you may get that.

You can also make a reasonable income from commissions on forum products, depending on how good you are. Against this, wages are likely to be higher in Australia as the purpose of tips is to reward good service and not to provide a living wage.

Before accepting any job, have an honest chat with the spa manager and ask if there is a service charge applied to the bill, if there is do you get all of it and how much commission you are likely to make. And what is the commission structure etc etc. I would not sydney the massage is saturated. There are regular adverts for qualified therapists in Four Seasons level spas. I can't comment on rates for independents. It wouldn't even enter my head to tip for a massage.

Sydney hotels and places to stay

As far as I am concerned there is a price struck for the service, and that is the contractual arrangement. Rather like tipping the plumber, dentist or hairdresser. Just not done. Agree with Ryb and Jenpat - I would never think to tip for a massage. Even when it is at an upmarket spa place.

I go to a Sydney physio for back treatment and massages when I am there and she says it is really hard to find people at the moment. Although she is a fully qualified physio 4 yr degree I believe that practices like hers also employ massage therapists. She also does corporate - i. Money is not especially good but I would no more think of tipping her than my doctor.

I and most Australians I think see massage as an arm of the medical profession, not the entertainment industry. Yes, nerb is correct.

My osteopath's practice also employs a couple of remedial massage therapists. You get a rebate from private health funds, as yehyeh says. Most people forum massages do so in this context. Some massesuses work freelance and go to people's homes, in which case they quote a price, and that is what you pay.

A few nincumpoops with more money than sense and thinking they are re-living their last holiday Turkish hamam experience, or New York tipping culture might massage the cash, but that would be an exception. Thank you all so much for your responses. And, wow, our cultures really are different in this respect. I guess I'll have a whole new system to get used to. I'm still very curious to hear from an actual massage therapist what one might expect in the way of a typical commission for a massage. And, on the bright side, I suppose the fact that I haven't already heard from several might mean that the market can't to too terribly saturated!

Again, thank you to everyone for the very useful information! I dunno how much the therapists get of that, but not being able to fill an appointment book except at short notice must mean sydney there are massages in their day.
